Your Facebook account was suspended because your linked Instagram account doesn’t follow our rules
Imagine you get a message that reads:
„Your Facebook account was suspended because your linked Instagram account doesn’t follow our rules. Log into your linked Instagram account to appeal our decision. You may have the right to challenge our decision in your country’s courts, or refer our decision to a certified dispute settlement body.”
The Instagram account in question? It’s never belonged to you, and the name is something completely unrelated to you.
If this sounds familiar, then unfortunately you, your business, or someone close to you has fallen into this trap. So, what now?
Step One – Contacting Facebook (aka a bureaucratic nightmare)
Alright, the first logical thing you want to do is contact Facebook. In theory, you should be able to appeal the suspension, but here’s where it gets tricky. Filing an appeal requires you to log in to… Instagram. But that account isn’t yours, so you can’t log in. And you’re stuck.
You try another route – contacting Facebook Help Center. Pretty soon, you realize they don’t have an email address you can write to. There’s no phone number either. What’s left is filling out a report form on the website, like the one for hacking issues: facebook.com/hacked. You fill it out, send it off… and wait.
And wait. What do you get in return? Pretty much nothing, aside from a few automated responses that sound like they were generated by a robot. And your problem? Still unresolved.
Many of my clients have discovered that these attempts to reach out lead nowhere, unless we’re counting the result of sheer frustration.
Losing your account – worst-case scenarios
When you run a business, your Facebook account is more than just a tool for scrolling through photos of friends. For many entrepreneurs, Facebook is the main platform for connecting with customers, managing marketing efforts, posting content, and running ads. Losing access to your account means halting your online activities, losing contact with your followers, and worse yet, being unable to run ads – often a key source of sales.
Sure, you can always create a new account, but then you’re starting from scratch – regaining your previous number of followers, comments, and reach could take years. What you’ve built over months or even years can vanish in an instant. Businesses lose not only time but also money, and trying to rebuild their online presence can require significant financial investment.
For many of my clients, losing their Facebook account meant having to move their marketing efforts to other platforms, which also required time and resources. Instead of creating new content, they had to focus on rebuilding what they already had – it’s like starting over, but with worse tools.
Are there any legal options?
When all the usual methods fail, the question becomes: what now? In such cases, it’s worth considering legal action. Meta Platforms Ireland, the company that manages Facebook accounts, while seemingly unreachable, is still subject to European law.
This is where a lawyer comes in, particularly one experienced in handling these kinds of cases. As a legal advisor, I take on precisely these sorts of challenges. Thanks to my knowledge of the laws and procedures governing Meta Platforms Ireland, I know how to find a solution when traditional methods fall short. My actions often lead to account recovery within 5-6 weeks.
If other methods of recovering your account fail, it’s worth not delaying the decision to pursue legal action – the sooner you act, the shorter the downtime for your account.
